A well-constructed arena is crucial for your surface to perform at its best. If you’re undertaking a self-build project there are some essential parts of the build that you need to take into consideration.

Equestrian Fibres and Surfaces have over 30 years of expert knowledge in the equestrian industry and have sourced the best cost-effective materials on the market for building arenas that offer great quality and will achieve the results you require from your arena. You can purchase all of your materials for your self-build from us either individual or as the DIY kit below.

01

1. Good Drainage

If your drainage is not free flowing your arena will hold water puddles and, in the winter, this could cause your surface to freeze.

02

2. Base Membrane

Before laying your surface always lay a membrane. This separates the sub-base layer and the drainage layer. It prevents any fine materials from the upper surface entering the drainage system and potentially creating a blockage. It helps prevent the sub-soil from moving upwards and contaminating the arena sub-base. The membrane will allow water to filter through freely.

03

3. A Stone Base

The construction of your base is unquestionably the most important aspect of your build. You need to ensure your base is as evenly compacted as possible. A poor laid base will result in pooling water and soft spots. We recommend a twice washed recycled stone for the base. It’s great for your arena and the environment.

04

4. Top Membrane

This layer helps to keep the crushed aggregate of your base layer from rising up into your surface. You can use a fine aggregate or a non-woven membrane.

05

5. Fences & Gates

To ensure longevity do this job properly. Concreting the fencing in prevents it from bowing in a few years. A recommended fence height is 122cm the top of the riding surface, which is about 152cm out of the ground. Kickboards should be 33cm to 40cm high to prevent surface loss.

Silica Sand

At Equestrian Fibres and Surfaces, we have built up an extensive range of equestrian grade sands from all over the country, from Burythorp in Malton to North Park in Redhill. Not all silica sand is ideal for equestrian use, so choosing a reputable supplier with the correct knowledge and experience is crucial. At a minimum, sand suitable for equestrian use should have sub-angular shaped grain particles and a low clay and silt content to promote good drainage. We are available to provide you with a quotation for any tonnage you require of approved Equestrian Grade silica sand. Specification sheets are also available on request.

Woven and Non-Woven Membrane

Membranes come in two types, with each playing a different but equally important role in the construction of your riding arena. Lower membranes are typically used to separate your drainage stone from the ground. We offer a standard lower membrane made from woven polypropylene that is strong, durable and resistant to all-natural acids and alkalis. Upper membranes are made from a non-woven geotextile and are used to separate your riding arena surface from the drainage stone. We can supply needle punched and thermally bonded membranes in three different thicknesses, depending on whether your arena will have a standard, intermediate or high level of use.
