The Environment Agency has withdrawn the use of shredded waste carpet in equestrian surfacing.

Surface stabilising fibres are added to a riding arena for several reasons. They hold many benefits for horse and rider. Simply using sand is not sufficient if the horse will be jumping and doing a lot of heavy work. Riding arena stabilising fibres are used to help improve the consistency of the surface.

Sand is a good base for a riding arena but it can absorb too much water. Sand alone will also cause your horse to ’ride deep’. This means the horse is riding in the sand rather than on top of it. Mixing riding arena stabilising fibres helps your horse work on the top of the surface. The fibres are made from synthetic materials that are mixed with the sand. These aid drainage and provide a good footing for your horse during movement. Synthetic fibres also help retain some moisture which is important because it helps keep the surface firm.

Another benefit is that horses are often more confident on firmer ground. Also, if you are a dedicated rider, they will allow you to ride all year round, even during periods of frost.
